Middle School Workshops

Middle School Presentations
Introduction: Today, you’re going to learn about all the different sustainability-related projects the Garrison middle school students have been working on!
The topics include:
-
The relationships between the food/culture and biome of different Spanish-speaking countries (Ecuador, Chile, Puerto Rico, Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Equatorial Guinea)
-
How we can use our understanding of nature to engineer solutions to problems in our world (a process called “biomimicry”)
-
How can civic action help us support the Sustainable Development Goals created by the United Nations?
Ecology of our Forest
Introduction: From the very tips of the trees to the bacteria living deep underground and all organisms big and small in between, our wild places are filled with potential. Take a walk through your local woods and let your wonder carry you through the web of life you will find there. Learn about the interconnectedness of our forests and how our own relationship with the Earth is an instrumental solution to climate change.
Business of a Brighter Future
Introduction: What businesses will thrive in 2050? This workshop will combine entrepreneurship and art to help brainstorm the businesses of tomorrow. We will look at current climate startups for inspiration and then think of our own ideas. Once we have our own business ideas, we draw these ideas and imagine what they could look like in the future.
Electric Vehicles, Hybrids, & Everything in Between
Introduction: Have you noticed how much car technology has changed in the last 20 years? This workshop will showcase a full range of live vehicles - from regular gas cars to hybrids and electric and everything in between. This session will be equal parts car talk and engineering design.
Climate Change Mixer
Introduction: Climate change affects everyone, everywhere, but not equally. In this workshop, you’ll play the role of one character, share your story, and learn from other characters from around the world. Each of you are affected differently by climate change: some for better, some for worse. We’ll use “your” stories to better understand climate change, and how people are responding around the world.
Sustainability Through Architecture
Introduction: This session will take you through architecture’s next step in sustainability. This workshop will be an introduction to regenerative design and how our built environments can be designed to give back more than what it takes, improving the health of our ecosystem and communities.
Climate Justice & Eco-Poetry
Introduction: As an environmental scientist and poet, the concepts of climate justice and eco-poetry are both important to my work. In this workshop, we will delve into the meaning of climate justice— and use poetry to articulate our own experiences surrounding nature and justice!
