Elementary School Workshops

Elementary School Workshops
Introduction: Learn about all the different sustainability-related projects your fellow Garrison elementary school students have been working on!
The topics include:
-
Learn how we recycled egg cartons to use for our own construction project! We learned about Inuit Eskimos, Arctic organisms, and how to tally and graph.
-
Join Kindergarteners as they teach you all about seeds and what plants need to grow. We did experiments to analyze how seeds change when they get water, sunlight, and soil.
-
Did you know plants grow better when you give them compliments? 1st-graders know this from first-hand experience. In this interdisciplinary project that blends sound waves with plant needs, we’ve been collecting data on sugar snap peas for months and can’t wait to share it with you!
-
In June, 2nd- and 5th-graders will be continuing the GUFS long-term citizen science project, measuring Carbon Sequestration in the trees of our school forest. 2nd-graders will be explaining this process, as well as how to ID and measure trees and why it matters.
-
This past April, we put GUFS on the Pollinator Pathway Map! Learn about the need for pollinators, their migratory pathway, why they migrate, why they’re endangered, and how our garden helps with this presentation!
-
4th-graders have been participating in March Mammal Madness this spring. Learn about the 65 unique species they researched and how they species are affected by extreme weather and climate change in this captivating presentation!
-
5th-graders have been engineering solutions to real-world issues! Learn about the real-world countries they’ve represented in this project and how they’ve worked as a team to achieve the common goal of hydropower.
Birds of Prey
Introduction: Various species of live hawks and owls will accompany Sharon Audubon Staff to demonstrate their beauty, power, and connection with the natural world! Similarities and differences of these amazing birds of prey will be discussed and several props will also be on hand for viewing. Through this program, we’ll understand why raptors and their environment should continue to be protected and respected.
Animal Menagerie
Introduction: Animal life in its diversity is astounding! This workshop will have us understanding and appreciating biodiversity through the study of live birds, reptiles, insects, and related props. We’ll learn about each group of animals as they compare the biology, behavior, ecology, and the behavioral and physical adaptations of other animals!
Sustainability Through Architecture
Introduction: This session will take you through architecture’s next step in sustainability. This workshop will be an introduction to regenerative design and how our built environments can be designed to give back more than what it takes, improving the health of our ecosystem and communities.
Colors of Place
Introduction: What if we got to know one "place" in nature really well? Do you think you would have neighbors? Do you think you would share that space with others? Are there plants there? Come find your "place" in a specific part of nature and learn to observe what is around you both big and small.
Sustainability Through Libraries
Introduction: The library is an essential part of the community in so many ways. But how can libraries help the environment? Many libraries and library systems, including the Desmond-Fish Public Library, are taking steps to make themselves more sustainable at this critical time. We’ll talk about those steps, and focus on how visiting the library and using its resources can help support that important sustainability mission.
Green Machine
Introduction: Come and learn about some of technological options that give us a more sustainable alternative to burning fossil fuels that are some of the biggest contributors to human impacted Climate Change. We will explore solar and geothermal energy and smart ways to save energy and help us protect our precious planet!
Sustainability Through Business
Introduction: Do you know you can use plant-based materials in business? In this workshop, you’ll use recycled materials to design business cards, sculptures, and more. You’ll learn all about how energy plays a role in the manufacturing of different products and the life cycle of these products. Reduce, reuse and recycle will have a new meaning after this workshop!
