About our School

Mission Statement
The Garrison Union Free School District is dedicated to creating a mutually caring, respectful and stimulating environment.  This will foster self-esteem and love of learning by empowering our children to excel academically, socially, creatively and physically.

The school district will develop evolving curricula and instructional methods to meet the needs of the children enabling them to experience success and to reach their full potential.

These goals are accomplished when the staff, parents, students and community work as partners to provide enriching educational experiences.  Our ultimate objective is to challenge all students to become self-motivated, lifelong learners and contributing members of society.

Principal's Message
100 years ago, nestled in the beauty of the Hudson Valley, a cornerstone was laid to commemorate the beginning of the Garrison Union Free School District school building. It was at that time that members of the Garrison community, gathered to work together to build a four room school house that would educate the children of the community. It was named the Garrison School House. Mr. Claude Bloom, the principal, worked tirelessly to make sure that each child received the best education that they could. On September 27, 1908, a groundbreaking ceremony took place. Mr. William Church Osborn presided over the celebration sharing with the audience that the school would be an institution that would "establish and develop a system of instruction that would lead the child from the school into life's occupation." Mr. Sloane who gave the sight for the school to be built gave the audience two very important pieces of advise. "Be a good listener." "Be a doer." Mrs. Clowes Chorley, the music teacher, led the children in singing "The Mountains, "The School and the Flag" and "America." The laying of the cornerstone was an important event in the history of the site where our school now stands.

Today, 100 years later, we applaud the efforts of the forefathers of this community and welcome you back to the 2008-2009 school year, Celebrating a Cornerstone Year is our theme for this school year.

As we look towards a new school year, we think about what has transpired in education since 1908. Our goals: providing a quality education for our students are still the same. Looking ahead to the future and making sure our students are ready to face the future are important to us and the values of good listening and working hard still prevail. Our little school house nestled in the beauty of the Hudson Valley continues to be the focal point of our community and establishes community relations while teaching the youth of today   what it means to reach our school wide goals.
